こころは今でも旅人と話すガリンペイロの店主・フミオさん。
故郷の千葉から宮古島にたどり着いたのは1995年の30年前。
島に住みだしたころに飲食店に勤めはじめ、宮古島の老舗・< Adish(現在クローズ) >や< ボックリーのチョッキ(現在ボックリー) >などに関わり16年もの歳月が経過。
時を経て2011年に <酒と旅ガリンペイロ> の看板を掲げた。
斬新な世界観を作ってきた店主のフミオさんが醸し出す独特の雰囲気は画面上ではつかめない手触り感がある。
入り口にレインボーフラッグがある理由もジェンダーや国籍関係なくあらゆる人々が安全に楽しめる事が前提で、自分が楽しめることも大切にしている。
一方で、長く店を続けていくことへの意識に語気を強めるフミオさん。常に開いているお店が安心をもたらす。
敷居をまたぐと目に入るのは、旅先で出会った異国情緒あふれる装飾の数々。
バックパッカー時代に集めた関心のある国の時刻表や地図のガイドブックなど、雑多な書籍が所狭しとフラットな審美眼で構成されている本棚。
提供される料理やお酒、層の厚いスタッフも含めてガリンペイロ仕込みであることは、カテゴライズのできない唯一無二性を秘めている。
ガリンペイロはガリンペイロである。
絶望への嘆きや反骨の想い、人生のぼやきまでもが、フミオさんとの語らいに変わるこの場所に、地元の常連も旅人も自然と集う。

【 Sake and Tabi Garimpeiro | Fumio Sunada 】
“It starts with me enjoying what I do. If the customers are having fun too, that’s all that really matters.”
It was back in 1995—30 years ago—that Fumio Sunada arrived in Miyakojima from his hometown in Chiba.
He began working in the local food scene, gradually becoming involved with long-standing island establishments such as Adish (now closed) and Bockley. 16 years passed in this way, and in 2011, he opened his own place: Sake and Tabi Garimpeiro.
Fumio has crafted a world entirely his own. The unique atmosphere he radiates is something you can’t quite capture on a screen—it’s the kind of tactile warmth you have to feel in person.
A rainbow flag hangs at the entrance, signaling that people of all genders and nationalities are welcome. Inclusivity and safety are a given, but just as important to Fumio is that he, too, is having fun.
At the same time, he speaks with conviction about the importance of keeping the Place running for the long term.
Step inside, and you’ll find the place filled with decorations gathered from Fumio’s many travels—objects that radiate a worldly charm, curated with a flat, open-minded aesthetic.
The food and drinks on offer are no exception: all of them are Garimpeiro-style originals, inspired and reimagined from his journeys.
Locals and travelers alike gather around the counter, drawn in by the chance to chat with the ever-upbeat owner. Their conversations turn each evening into a lively, communal night.
And for those who can’t make it to the bar, there’s always Garimpeiro’s Golden Nugget Hour, a podcast you can listen to on your phone for timely updates and stories from the shop.

Do you usually wake up early in the morning?
> I don’t actually get up early, but I do wake up early. I guess that’s what getting older does to you. I usually sleep for about four hours and take siestas, too.

> Water and beer. When it comes to beer, I’m a Super Dry fan.

> Orange. Even the ceiling in my shop is orange. I don’t really have a color I dislike.

> “I eat what my body seems to crave, in the amount it seems to want.”

> “I try to make this place—a shop—a safe space for everyone”
Is there someone you’d like to meet or someone you respect right now?
> My dad. He’s no longer around, but I often find myself wanting to sit down and chat with him—about the world, this bar, and everything in between.
