受けた恩は次の世代へつなぐ
宮古島にある映画館「南の島 パニパニシネマ」は、2025年10月で現館長・下地史子さんのもとで5周年を迎え、6年目へと歩みを進めている。
今年の6月には名前も「南の島 パニパニシネマ」と改めた。
かつて閉館の危機に直面したこの映画館は、前館長の「島に映画の火を灯す」という思いに共鳴した支援者の手によって再出発を果たした。
その意志を引き継ぎ、下地さんが館長に就任してからの日々は、まさに手探りからの再構築だったという。
現在では、下地島空港の国際線の再開により香港や韓国からの旅行者の姿もちらほら見られるようになった。
国が異なっても、映画を愛する気持ちに違いはなく、日本最南端の映画館としての認知も少しずつ広がっている。
「かつて昔は映画がそうであったように、今の宮古島の子どもたちにも、もっと気軽に映画に触れてほしい」。
“Pay it Forward（受けた恩は次の世代へ）”という言葉のように、自分が受け取ったものを若い世代へとバトンを繋ぎ、絶やさないようにしたい――下地さんはそう語ります。
配信サービス全盛の時代においても、「映画鑑賞体験」の魅力をどのように伝えるか、日々思案を重ねている。
インディペンデントな映画館ならではのプログラムで上映映画に紐づいたイベントを積極的に打ち出し、これまでに訪れた映画監督や役者の顔ぶれなどの面々も数えきれないほど個性豊かだ。
東京で暮らしていた頃に訪れた映画館での思い出を、今でも楽しそうに語る下地さん。
その記憶は、映画を通じて誰かの心に残る時間を生み出したいという現在の活動につながっている。
未来を担う子どもたちへ、なにを託せるか。

> 曲ではありませんが、場内から漏れ聞こえる上映中の映画の音に耳を傾けながら、そのシーンを想像したり、観客が盛り上がっている様子を思い浮かべています。

> アダンの葉で作られた指輪をいつもカバンに入れている。
毎日のルーティンはありますか？
> 犬の散歩、規則正しいことは苦手。

> 知足 大切な事を忘れがちなので忘れないように掲示している。
アイデアを創出するための方法はありますか？
> 誰かとの対話の中で、ふとしたきっかけからアイデアが生まれることが多いです。ただし、意欲が湧くまでには少し時間がかかるタイプです。
> 他地域の映画館関係者との情報交換を通じて、宮古島の環境に適した取り組み方を実現できる方法を日々考えています。

“Pay It Forward”
Passing on the kindness we receive to the next generation
Located on Miyako Island, the cinema Minami no Shima Panipani Cinema will celebrate its fifth anniversary under current director Ayako Shimoji in October 2025, marking the beginning of its 6th year.
In June of this year, the cinema was officially renamed “Minami no Shima Panipani Cinema“.
Once on the brink of closure, the theater was revived through the support of those who resonated with the former director’s desire to “keep the flame of cinema alive on the island.”
Director Shimoji has carried on that vision, and recalls that the early days of her leadership involved rebuilding everything from scratch, often through trial and error.
Today, with the reopening of international flights to Shimojishima Airport, visitors from places like Hong Kong and South Korea have begun to appear.
Regardless of nationality, the love for cinema is universal. Recognition of this theater—Japan’s southernmost cinema—is steadily growing.
“As movies once were in the past, I want the children of Miyako Island today to have more casual and open access to films,” says Shimoji.
Like the phrase “Pay it Forward,” she hopes to pass on what she has received to the next generation, ensuring that the chain of goodwill is never broken.
Even in this age of dominant streaming services, she continues to reflect on how to convey the irreplaceable joy of the cinema experience.
Through unique, independent programming, the theater actively hosts events linked to its screenings. Over the years, it has welcomed a remarkable number of directors and actors—each one rich in character and creativity.
She fondly recalls memories of visiting cinemas during her time living in Tokyo.
Those experiences continue to inspire her desire to create moments that resonate in the hearts of others through film.

With excitement and hope, she continues to light the screen—one day at a time.

It’s not a song, but I like listening to the sounds of a film playing inside the theater—imagining what’s happening on screen, and picturing the audience getting excited.
Something you always wear?
A ring made from pandanus leaves, which I always keep in my bag.
Your daily routine?
Walking my dog. I’m not good at keeping strict routines.
A word you recently looked up?
“Chisoku” (contentment with what one has). I even have it posted in the theater.
How do you generate new ideas?
Ideas often emerge during conversations with others. That said, I usually need some time before I feel motivated.
I also engage in regular exchanges with cinema staff in other regions to explore practices that might work in the context of Miyako Island.
The former director was especially skilled at coming up with ideas.
How do you put your ideas into action?
Once an idea strikes, I try to act on it immediately—though it usually takes me a while to get started.
Do you do anything for your health?
Walking with my dog.
What’s important to you in your work?
I always aim to ensure that guests enjoy their movie experience and leave feeling good.
Someone you admire or want to meet?
I admire and would love to meet people who incorporate social support into their daily actions.
