もともと”グリセリンクイーン”という店名の由来は大好きな甲本ヒロト率いる『ザ・クロマニヨンズ』の曲名からとった。
しかし、その奥にはアメリカのロックミュージシャン『スージー・クアトロ』のGlycerine Queenの存在を知ることとなる。
いつもエネルギーがみなぎるまきこさんはロックンロールさながら明るくほがらかな存在だ。
ある日、宮古でノニジュースを作っているおじいさんに「石けんを作りなさい」と言われた。その一言が、まきこさんを石けん作りの世界へ導いた。

お店で体験できる石けん作りは、まるで科学実験のようだ。
植物性の油に水酸化ナトリウムを加えると化学反応が起こり、石けんが生まれる。その過程で生まれるのが「グリセリン」。グリセリンは、化粧品にも使われる保湿成分として知られており、肌のうるおいを守ってくれる。
そのうえ、石けんの色付けは宮古島ならでは素材を採用したり、香りは植物由来のエッセンシャルオイルも選べたりとカスタマイズできる喜びは何にも変え難い独自の体験として記憶に宿る。
記憶と強く結びついている嗅覚には、日常に戻っても石けんの香りが旅の思い出をよみがえらせてくれる。

【 glycerin Queen | Makiko Hara】
“Memories of Travel Awaken Through Fragrance”
A quick glance at Makiko’s Instagram reveals her radiant energy and her joyful exchanges with people from all walks of life.
Through her soap-making workshops, she creates moments of genuine connection — experiences filled with laughter, curiosity, and warmth.
The name of her shop, “Glycerin Queen,” was originally inspired by a song by The Cro-Magnons, one of her favorite bands led by Hiroto Kōmoto.
Later, she discovered that the phrase also traces back to “Glycerine Queen” — a song by the American rock musician Suzi Quatro.
Brimming with vitality, Makiko herself embodies the spirit of rock’n’roll — bright, spontaneous, and full of life.
One day, an elderly man in Miyako who made noni juice told her,
“You should make soap.”
That simple suggestion led her into the world of soap-making.
At her shop, the hands-on soap-making experience feels almost like a science experiment.
When plant-based oils are mixed with sodium hydroxide, a chemical reaction takes place — and soap is born.
During this process, glycerin is produced, a natural moisturizer widely used in cosmetics that helps keep the skin hydrated.
For coloring, Makiko uses materials unique to Miyakojima, while the fragrances can be customized with plant-derived essential oils.
This sense of creative freedom — choosing color, scent, and form — transforms the workshop into a deeply personal and memorable experience.
Because our sense of smell is so closely tied to memory, the gentle scent of her soap can rekindle the feelings and moments of a past journey, long after one has returned home.
