「伝統や継承から産業へ – 宮古らしさとは何か」
2021年より、先代であるお母さまからお店を引き継ぎ、今年で5年目を迎える萬矢叶子さん。
代表就任直後から、什器の配置やレイアウトの見直しを行い、企画展の開催も視野に入れたリニューアルを進めてきた。
「叶」という名は、先祖の名前に由来し、叶子さん自身の名にも重ねられている。
叶が歩んできたこれまでの過程で、さまざまな地域の作家たちと関わりを持ってきた。
そうした出会いを送るなかで、叶子さんの根底にはいつも「宮古らしさとは何か」という問いがある。
現在は、叶オリジナルのプロダクト（風鈴・お香・マース袋など）を少しずつ発表しており、訪れた人が気軽に手に取れるよう、店づくりにも工夫を凝らしている。
周囲の環境や時代の変化に伴い、若い世代や男性客など、新しい層の来店があることもここ最近の傾向だ。

『宮古上布』の現在地
宮古島の伝統工芸である『宮古上布』を、今後はより本格的に発信していきたいと叶子さんは語る。
島内での流通の体制を整え、機織り(はたおり)や藍染めといった体験をより身近に感じられる環境づくりを探っている。
「伝統や保存・継承の枠を超え、持続可能な産業として、宮古島の誇れる文化を広く伝えていきたい」
そう語る叶子さんの声には、いつものチャーミングな笑顔の奥に揺るぎない意志が宿っていた。

養老孟司さんの、生き物の細部を通して社会を見つめる観察眼と、宮崎駿さんの子どもたちの感性の伸ばし方を考える姿勢。その二つの視点が交わることで、読んでいてとてもおもしろい。
特に、宮崎さんが理想とする子どもたちの遊び場をイラスト調で描いたページは見ていて楽しく、思わず眺め込んでしまう。

“From Tradition and Inheritance to Industry — What Does It Mean to Be ‘Miyako”
Since 2021, Kanako Yorozuya has been leading Ryukyu COLLECTION Kana, succeeding the store from her mother, the previous owner.
Upon taking over, she immediately began rethinking the layout and display of the shop — moving forward with a renewal that also considered the future possibility of holding curated exhibitions.
The name “Kana” originates from her family lineage and also connects to her own given name.
While the shop once carried works by artists outside Okinawa—such as Bizen ware—Kana now spends her days exploring what truly represents “Miyakojima’s essence.”
Today, she continues to introduce original Kana products—such as wind chimes, incense, and maasu (salt) pouches—while refining the space so that visitors can casually pick them up and enjoy them.
With changes in the surrounding environment and times, younger generations and more male customers have also begun to visit in recent years.

The Present State of “Miyako Jōfu”
Kana speaks passionately about her desire to more fully promote Miyako Jōfu, the traditional textile craft of Miyakojima.
She is working to build a local distribution network and to create opportunities where people can experience weaving (hataori) and indigo dyeing up close.
“By going beyond mere preservation and inheritance, I want to establish a framework that develops these traditions into a living industry—one that proudly represents the culture of Miyakojima.”
In her words, behind her ever-charming smile, one could sense an unwavering determination.

> White.
I used to wear mostly black, but after receiving some advice, I’ve become more conscious of wearing white.
Your best subject in school?
> Biology.
I often found myself gazing at the illustration of a chicken’s cell division in the textbook. Growing up surrounded by many animals at home, living things were always close to me.
Is there a movie you’ve watched over and over again?
> A Beautiful Mind (2001, USA)
> Captain Fantastic (2016, USA)
I still rewatch both films whenever I have time to relax.
If you could pick one book from your bookshelf, which would it be?
> Mushime to Anime (Insect Eyes and Animation Eyes) – by Takeshi Yoro & Hayao Miyazaki (Shinchosha Bunko)
What fascinates me is Takeshi Yoro’s keen observation of society through the minute details of living creatures, and Hayao Miyazaki’s reflections on how to nurture children’s sensibility.
The dialogue between these two perspectives makes the book truly captivating.
In particular, I love the pages where Miyazaki illustrates his vision of an ideal playground for children — the drawings are so charming that I can’t help but linger over them.
It’s also a book I often choose as a gift for friends.
Where is your favorite place?
> Karimata.
It’s where my mother’s roots are. Whenever I feel the need to refresh or cleanse my mind, I find myself drawn there.
If you had to choose one song that fits your mood right now, what would it be?
> Soratutsumi – Masakatsu Takagi.
What do you always carry with you?
> Purifying salt.
I keep it in a small pouch and always slip it into my pocket or bag before going out.
Do you have any daily routines?
> Hugging my children.

the name of the deity enshrined at Oharuzu Utaki (a sacred site on Ikemajima,Miyakojima).
Do you have a method for generating ideas?
> I pick up a few books related to what I want to learn and use AI (ChatGPT) to deepen my understanding.
How do you usually express or output those ideas?
> I write endlessly on a blank sheet of paper with a ballpoint pen.I always leave margins so I can add notes later, and I’ve long made it a habit to switch between blue and red pens depending on the purpose.
Is there anything you do regularly to stay health?
> I sleep whenever I can.
Kanako san is a mother of two.
What do you value most in your work?
> The pursuit of happiness for everyone involved.
There should never be any disadvantage to the customers, artists, or staff. This belief is rooted in the corporate philosophy of my previous workplace.
Is there someone you’d like to meet?
> My late grandfather, Masayoshi Sadoyama.
I still keep his extensive fieldwork notes and a wealth of materials close at hand, but I often wish I could have heard his voice and stories in person.
